Where to begin? Well, I am confident in saying that I’m hooked on CrossFit! I love the whole idea of what CrossFit means and I can tell you that when I’m driving home from work in my hooptie and get stuck behind some slow poke, I feel like yelling out the window and saying “look dude, speed it up! I am gonna miss the last CrossFit class of the day! MOVE IT! – I gotta get my WOD in!”
I started CrossFit back in March 2011 at CrossFit Advanced in Easton, PA with owner Greg Tymon. If you have ever seen any CrossFit gym, they can be incredibly intimidating with all the heavy metal music blaring, crazy exercises routines, freakish acronyms, swinging kettle bells, death defying rope climbs, blistered bloody hands, crazy knee high socks, tons of body tattoos and of course some interestingly placed piercings! – and that’s just the women! Anyway, what I found was that these people are great! Not only are they extremely friendly, but they also like to work hard, have fun, encourage and motivate each other!
Prior to joining CrossFit, I had only just recently started working out and eating right for the very first time in my life! Yep – from as far back as I could remember, flipping through TV channels after work or school was my idea of a hard work out and eating right was getting smoked turkey on my bacon, cheddar Ciabatta melt at one of my all time favorite local restaurants – Wawa! I am about 6ft tall and I was pushing about 243lbs with a “TIGHT” 38 waist and was about to go up to a 40 real quick! So I had to do something FAST!
After the very first session I was obsessed! It was so much fun and Greg and his staff really know how to kick your ass! Every day it’s something different whether the focus be on heavy lifting or cardio, CrossFit provides me a safe place in which I can consistently push myself, meet great people and learn something new! It’s not just about getting stronger faster. Greg really puts a lot of thought into providing a balanced exercise and “lifestyle” program including nutrition, mobility training, skill movements, and balance awareness. Yeah we lift really heavy weight and we do it really fast – but that’s only part of it!
Since joining CrossFit, I have lost the equivalent of a small child, am now about 50lbs less, wear a size 32 waist pant (which hasn’t been seen since Catholic grade school), done my very first Full Marathon, and joined a “Tough Mudder” – whatever the hell that is! My friends and family don’t know what has come over me and I love it! I look forward to going every day, meeting up with some good friends and seeing what craziness will ensue! Thanks again Greg for making your place such a welcoming and encouraging environment! You have changed the way I think about fitness!
